Three filmmakers uncover the aesthetic and storytelling choices behind Art & Popular films and how these reflect the authors’ deeper ideas on this thing of being human. Retrieving classic and hidden gems from all times and places, Royale Without Cheese debates how they’re shaped by their different cultural and historical contexts in biweekly reviews (Portuguese and English). In our interview segment, we present filmmakers from all walks of life, but all gems, whether hidden or known. Not only a band of filmmakers, but also friends, our round table debates offer the best balance between the in-depth and the informal, opening the understanding of heavy filmmaking concepts and themes to all. We believe good filmmaking not only consists of practice, but simply talking about film. Keeping an active thinking spirit on what cinema can mean by debating different perspectives together with fellow companions can embolden any filmmaker in their work to try new possibilities.
