D-Day - 6 June 1944 - was the largest amphibious invasion in history. Codenamed Operation Overlord. The Allies would use over 5,000 ships and landing craft to land more than 150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy France. The British would land at Gold and Sword the Canadians on Juno and the Americans at Omaha and Utah by the end of that day, the Allied forces  had established a strong foothold along the coast and could begin their advance into France.
