Welcome to Season 6, Episode 34! This might be the world's easiest trivia question, but what multibillion dollar sport began as a fun pastime in Hawaii? If you guessed surfing, you'd be right, and that's our main story this episode. Long before surf shops, professional competitions, or the Beach Boys songs Surfin' USA and Surfer Girl, people across Polynesia had been riding waves for generations. And Hawaiʻi became the cultural center of surfing. Hawaiians developed surfing, preserved it, and ultimately helped teach much of the rest of the world how to do it. In this episode we talk about the early history of surfing, how it developed over the years, some of the important people who spread enthusiasm about surfing, and more.
