Observing the Architecture of PersuasionPersuasion is everywhere.Advertising. News. Politics. Social media. Relationships. Friends. Family. Experts. Institutions.Information is constantly being presented to us—and much of that communication has direction.It is attempting to move us toward an opinion, a conclusion, an action, or a choice.But persuasion does not make the choice for us.Even allowing yourself to be persuaded is a choice.In this episode of Iconic Freedom | The Formula, Gregory explores the often-overlooked space between receiving information and making a decision to choose.Rather than asking whether someone is manipulating us, the more useful question may be:What choice am I being directed toward?And then:What did I do with the information before making it part of my decision to choose?Someone else may provide incomplete, inaccurate, or misleading information. That participation belongs to them.But their participation does not erase ours.The source remains accountable for the information it provides.The receiver remains accountable for what they do with that information before choosing from it.The same principle applies when we attempt to understand the motivations of others.Reality may never reveal another person's actual internal motivation with certainty.And it doesn't need to.The more accurately we learn to observe ourselves, the more we recognize how little access we actually have to what is occurring within another person.Getting into someone else's head is a search for information you cannot reliably obtain, about choices you cannot make, within a person you cannot govern.And even if you could wander around another person's internal dialogue—what exactly are you planning to do once you're in there?Their internal dialogue belongs to them.Their choices belong to them.Return to what can be observed.Return to your own participation.This also reveals an important distinction between care and control.Care can provide information.Care can offer assistance.Care can communicate concern.But care leaves the final choice with the individual.My perception of what is best for you does not create an obligation for you to choose it.Self-governance does not mean living without influence.It means retaining ownership of our participation in influence.And when the outcome of a choice provides new information, accountability carries the process forward.Accountability isn't simply saying:“I take accountability.”The question is:Now what?Because:Accountability is how the information from one choice impacts the next decision to choose.Without subsequent refinement, accountability may be acknowledgment—but it is not yet development.You can awaken a thousand times.You can recognize the pattern a thousand times.You can take accountability a thousand times.And you can still spend your life driving the same roundabout if the information never impacts the next decision to choose.Observe the information. Observe the direction. Observe your participation.
