Episode 43: Recognising Burnout - The Subtle Signs Healthcare Workers Miss

About this episode
Burnout in healthcare doesn't always look the way we expect.
In this episode, I'm joined by Venita Lê Schandorf, also known as Vy, a board-certified family nurse practitioner based in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Before moving into advanced practice, Vy spent ten years working as a registered nurse and has now been practicing in family medicine for the past six years.
In this first part of our conversation, we explore Vy's journey into healthcare, her multicultural background, and the early signs of burnout that many healthcare professionals quietly experience.
Vy reflects on how counselling during her college years helped her begin to recognise and name emotions that many clinicians carry while continuing to care for others.
In this episode we discuss:
• The subtle signs of burnout in healthcare
• High-functioning depression and emotional numbness
• The pressure to push through stress in medicine
• Why many healthcare professionals struggle to recognise burnout in themselves
This episode opens an honest conversation about the emotional realities of working in healthcare and the importance of recognising burnout early.
