Imagined Realms: An Introduction to World Building

Tavern Talks: Worldbuilding in D&D—From Gods and Lore to Geography, Culture, and MagicAdam and Zach welcome listeners back to Tavern Talks for a surface-level overview of Dungeons & Dragons worldbuilding, contrasting Adam’s top-down approach (history, lore, pantheons, gods, then towns and NPCs) with Zach’s bottom-up method (starting in dungeons with creatures and items, then expanding outward). They discuss using official Wizards of the Coast modules versus homebrew, encouraging DMs to let players help create hometowns, regions, and lore to deepen immersion. The episode covers mapping and geography (including Adam’s “rice method”), how rivers, mountains, and water shape civilizations, and how terrain influences culture, politics, conflict, and settlement design. They emphasize memorable NPCs, building lore from real-world history, handling fantasy race prejudices with care and player comfort, defining magic’s role (including restricted magic in Adam’s empire), managing economies to prevent exploitation, and using seasons and natural disasters to make worlds feel real, then share where to follow the podcast on social media.00:00 Welcome to Tavern Talks 01:35 What Worldbuilding Means 02:03 Top Down vs Bottom Up 03:13 Homebrew or Modules 03:45 Start With Gods and Lore 05:11 Let Players Add Places 07:22 Mapping and Rice Method 09:25 Geography Shapes Culture 14:20 Build Rivers Cities Roads 18:49 Lore History and Legends 22:07 Races Prejudice and Conflict 26:30 Slave Trade Dilemma 27:08 Nat 20 Escape Chaos 28:08 Turning Trauma Into Activism 29:01 Settlements Shape Lore 29:56 Building Diverse Towns 30:47 Empire Town Template 32:36 Swamps And City Flavor 33:06 NPCs Drive The Plot 34:16 Favorite NPC Stories 35:30 Templeton The Rat God 37:30 Magic Systems And Status 39:01 Economy And Shopping Balance 41:13 Restricted Magic Empires 43:35 Seasons Disasters And Immersion 46:49 Key Takeaways And Wrap Up 48:54 Farewell And Social Links
