Ep. 93 – How Far Can Levity Take You

Mesilas Yesharim··19 September 2026·6 min

About this episode

A little joke can lead straight to gilui arayos. The Mesilas Yesharim quotes the Mishnah in Avos: frivolity and lightheartedness are the gateway to one of the worst aveiros imaginable. How is that possible? Gilui arayos is one of the big three—people understand how terrible it is, how severe the punishment is. Yet a few jokes, a little loosening up, and suddenly the barriers come down. Fear disappears, one step leads to another, and before you know it, you're standing at the edge of an aveira you swore you'd never approach. This isn't just about the final act—it's about the lead-up, the issurei arayos like looking and thinking that people dismiss as "not such a big deal." Once you joke about something serious, it stops being serious. The inhibitions that protect you dissolve, and what felt impossible becomes shockingly easy. "We're being shomer negiah—we're only holding hands." That's not shomer negiah, and once you've crossed that line, the next step isn't far. Can you recognize how dangerous levity is? Will you guard the seriousness of what protects you before it's too late?Hosted by Rabbi Ari Klapper and produced by Eli Podcast Productions, this episode is part of the Real Judaism series, available on RealJudaism.org.
