Ep. 98 – Using Laughter the Right Way

About this episode
A leitz can't be helped by words—only by suffering. The Mesilas Yesharim teaches that someone who doesn't take anything seriously won't be moved by mussar, by advice, by gentle correction. It slides off them. The only thing that penetrates is shoiftim—judgment, physical consequences they can't dismiss. Life will smack them in the face, especially after marriage, when seriousness is demanded and there's no more room for games. If you don't learn beforehand, reality will teach you the hard way.But laughter does have a place. The Gemara speaks of clowns who were ben Olam Haba because they cheered up people in depression. Laughter is a tool—but if you only have one tool, you'll misuse it everywhere. You can't use a drill for every job; sometimes you need a hammer, sometimes a screwdriver. If laughter is your essence, your default everywhere, you've lost the ability to navigate life. You need multiple tools. If you naturally lean toward humor, use it wisely and work on developing seriousness. Otherwise, you'll hurt yourself and possibly others. Can you distinguish when to laugh and when to stop? Will you develop the range of tools you need to live well?Hosted by Rabbi Ari Klapper and produced by Eli Podcast Productions, this episode is part of the Real Judaism series, available on RealJudaism.org.
