Ep. 96 – Lowering Its Importance

About this episode

A joke says, "This doesn't matter." The Mesilas Yesharim teaches that leitzonus throws any topic into the dirt, regardless of how important it actually is. The nature of a joke is to take something serious and make it trivial. You feel it when someone jokes at your expense—they're telling you, "You're not important." Spouses who mock each other inflict deep wounds because the message is clear: "You're not chashiv to me." The Rambam says a husband must honor his wife more than himself, and a wife must honor her husband like a king. Making jokes does the exact opposite—it degrades. This style of humor—sharp, biting, cutting—has become normalized over the past 40-50 years, but it destroys relationships and destroys people's outlooks on life. Someone good at this, quick-witted with devastating one-liners, has a talent—but it's a massive nisayon. "A choyzik maker is a choyzik maker," as the saying goes. You can't compartmentalize; if you joke about everything, you'll eventually joke about sacred things, lowering them in your own eyes and everyone else's. Can you use words to build instead of tear down? Will you recognize the damage before it's irreversible?Hosted by Rabbi Ari Klapper and produced by Eli Podcast Productions, this episode is part of the Real Judaism series, available on RealJudaism.org.
