Ep. 91 – Drowning in Levity

About this episode

Being stuck in gashmiyus is the easy nisayon—but there's a harder one. The Mesilas Yesharim reveals that the second major obstacle to zerizus is schok and kalos rosh, joking around all the time. Why is this such a difficult nisayon? Because it's like drowning in the ocean with no land in sight, no boats, no hope. Even if you're a great swimmer, you're not making it out. A couple recently went jet skiing in Aruba, got stranded in the Atlantic, and miraculously were found—but the odds of finding two tiny people bobbing in the ocean are almost zero. That's how difficult this nisayon is.One joke can destroy everything. You're in a serious meeting about campus security, the college president makes a joke, and suddenly the issue is buried—no one can bring it back up without looking overly serious. You want to improve yourself, but someone in your group cracks a joke and the whole thing collapses. You don't want to seem weird in front of your friends, so you go along with it. Levity destroys commitment faster than anything. Can you take your life seriously even when everyone around you is laughing? Will you hold firm when the atmosphere tries to pull you down?Hosted by Rabbi Ari Klapper and produced by Eli Podcast Productions, this episode is part of the Real Judaism series, available on RealJudaism.org.
