This Kind Of Punishment Is Hurting Your Child More Than You Think

About this episode

Not every punishment produces wisdom. Some methods may secure obedience for a moment while quietly producing fear, shame, and emotional distance in your child. Could one of these harmful discipline patterns be present in your home?In this honest conversation, we examine five approaches that can damage connection without creating lasting obedience: yelling, silent treatment, dismissing emotions, making unrealistic threats, and blaming children for a parent’s emotional reactions.Yelling may make a child comply immediately, but it can teach them that the loudest person wins. Eventually, children may stop responding to calm instructions and wait until a parent raises their voice.Silent treatment communicates an equally painful message: “When you disappoint me, you lose my love.” Biblical discipline must always separate a child’s behavior from the unconditional love and connection they still need.We also discuss why phrases such as “Don’t cry,” “It’s nothing,” or “Get over it” prevent children from learning healthy emotional regulation. Their struggle may seem small from an adult perspective, but it is real to them.Threats we cannot enforce also weaken parental authority. When consequences are extreme, unrelated, or impossible to carry out, children learn that our words do not carry weight. Finally, children should never be made responsible for regulating a parent’s anger, sadness, or frustration. They can learn repentance, reconciliation, and forgiveness without carrying an emotional burden that belongs to adults. Parenting is not about removing boundaries or avoiding consequences. Children still need loving authority and obedience, even when they do not fully understand our decisions. But the goal is obedience that eventually flows from love, trust, and relationship - not fear.Parenting is a marathon, not a five-minute sprint. When we chase an immediate solution, we may lose our child’s heart in the process. At The Family Oasis, we believe the Holy Spirit can reveal our blind spots and help us replace inherited parenting patterns with humility, wisdom, and grace. We can listen, repent, ask our children for forgiveness, and begin again. Which of these patterns have you struggled with most? Share your experience in the comments.
