26 Years Of Marriage: Honest Wedding Anniversary Q&A About Love, Parenting, Conflict

About this episode
What does it really take to remain married for 26 years? Not perfection, effortless compatibility, or a life without conflict but grace, growth, honest communication, and a commitment to keep choosing unity.
For our 26th wedding anniversary, we sat down for an intimate Christian marriage Q&A about the beautiful moments, painful seasons, and lessons that shaped our relationship. We talk honestly about the early years when we both felt emotionally alone. We entered marriage with different personalities, expectations, communication styles, and ideas about what married life should look like. One important lesson was realizing that a spouse cannot read your mind or fulfil every need in your heart. Only Jesus can carry that place. Learning to receive from Him changed how we approached loneliness, disappointment, and one another.
We also discuss our different love languages. Thoughtful gifts and surprises make Shamira feel seen, while acts of service and simply sharing the same space are deeply meaningful to Hugues. Understanding those differences helped us stop assuming that love must look the same for both of us.This conversation goes deeper into financial pressure during our missionary years, parenting, emotional responsibility, our experience with cancer, and the difficult seasons that tested our marriage. Those seasons were not wasted. They exposed selfishness, strengthened our faith, and taught us to bring our emotions and worries to the Holy Spirit without making our spouse responsible for carrying everything.Marriage is not a prison. It can become a foundation where both people grow but unity does not develop automatically simply because the years pass. It must be pursued, protected, discussed, and sometimes fought for.
At The Family Oasis, we believe a Christ-centered marriage can become stronger through humility, sacrifice, prayer, forgiveness, honest communication, and the decision to keep walking together.Whether you are newly married, raising children, facing conflict, or entering the empty-nest years, we hope this honest conversation reminds you that hard seasons are only seasons. God can produce something precious within them.
