Republicans Blame "Big Oil" and "Price Gouging" for High…

About this episode

Republicans are looking for a quick answer to soaring diesel prices, and one idea gaining support is a ban on U.S. diesel exports. Nate and Charlie break down why that seemingly simple fix could create a much bigger economic mess. They dig into diesel markets, refinery capacity, global supply, the Jones Act, price gouging claims, and the unintended consequences that can follow when politicians try to override market prices. The episode also looks back at Nixon's 1973 soybean embargo and the long-term lesson Nate argues it offers for anyone who thinks export restrictions come without consequences. Then the conversation turns to war, energy prices, Washington incentives, and why politicians so often end up proposing solutions to problems government helped create. Later, Nate and Charlie preview a ProPublica investigation involving Susan Collins, military contractors, campaign contributions, and an FBI anti-corruption investigation, while noting the allegations and denials discussed in the reporting.
