About this episode

For the past two years, the AI industry has sold a story that AGI was almost here, that the biggest cloud players would deliver it, and that enterprises needed to buy in fast or risk being left behind. Now reality is starting to cut through the hype. Amazon's decision to close its San Francisco AGI lab, while continuing selected frontier-model work and AI products, is a signal that the market is separating research ambition from commercial execution. This is not the end of AI, and it is not even the end of Amazon's model efforts. But it is a very public step back from the idea that creating an AGI-branded organization automatically creates durable business value. That matters far beyond Amazon. When one of the world's largest technology companies narrows its focus, every CIO, CTO, and cloud buyer should ask who else has overpromised, overspent, and overestimated how quickly generalized intelligence would become an enterprise reality. My argument today is simple: this will not be the last pullback. As budgets tighten and customers demand proof, more companies will retreat from AGI theater and return to practical AI that actually survives contact with the business.
