What Happens When Everything You Trained For Stops Working With Robert Kovach

About this episode
Imagine everything you built your career on turning out to be only half true.Robert Kovach, Corporate Psychologist and Managing Partner of Kovach Consulting Partners, lived it. In August 1991 he moved to Budapest with his doctoral exams behind him, a head full of industrial and organizational psychology models, and a job at the International Management Center, a beachhead for Western management education in the former socialist economies. Then the translator started translating, and he could see his material was not connecting. What followed was nine years of relearning across Budapest, Warsaw and Moscow. Robert shares what he did when his framework stopped working: he got curious, asked lots of questions, and let his ego go. He explains why a returnable-bottle system that cost tens of millions of dollars collapsed because nobody returned the bottles, and what that teaches about the moment a leader has to upgrade their mental map.Claire adds the brain science behind the discomfort. When trusted models stop matching reality, the nervous system registers threat. Leaders who recover stay present inside that discomfort, build new pathways through repetition, and practice the self-awareness that lets them tell their brain, “Thank you for keeping me alive. I have this.”The conversation closes in the present: senior leaders navigating AI, wars in unexpected places, and a world they have never led in. Claire’s point lands hard. Leaders are trained to lead in calm conditions, and almost nobody trains them to lead in uncertainty. That gap is the work of Pressure-Proof Leadership™.
