About this episode

Send us Fan MailAracy de Carvalho (1908-2011), celebrated as 'Righteous Among the Nations', played a vital role in saving German Jews by supporting their emigration to Brazil during the late 1930s while she was at the Brazilian consulate in Hamburg. One prominent individual she helped was Margarethe Levy (1908-2011), who emigrated to Brazil with her husband shortly after Kristallnacht. In the late 1970s, Levy honored Carvalho posthumously with the title of Righteous from Yad Vashem, as Carvalho had been her lifelong companion. This book primarily narrates the intertwined migrations of these two women between Brazil and Germany, emphasizing the enduring friendship that connected them. It also explores the migratory experiences of a group of German Jews, including Levy, who left Hamburg to create new lives in São Paulo.
