Welcome to the podcast made for intermediate English learners who want to listen to English, and learn about different topics in a fun and easy way. Welcome back to the podcast! first of all, I'm sorry I've been away for a little while. I took some time off and went on vacation last month, so I haven't uploaded a new episode for a while. I really missed talking to you guys, and I'm happy to be back! I hope you've been doing well, and I hope you've had a chance to relax and enjoy some time for yourself, too. Anyway, I'm back now, and today we're going to talk about some big international news. Have you been following the news about China and the United States recently? If you have, you may have heard one name again and again: Xi Jinping. In September 2026, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the United States and met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. It was a big event because China and the United States are two of the most powerful countries in the world. They are also major economic partners, but they have had many disagreements in recent years. So, why did Xi visit the United States? What did he and Trump talk about? And perhaps most importantly, did they actually agree on anything? Let's take a closer look. So, what actually happened during Xi Jinping's visit? Well, the visit started with a pretty impressive welcome. When Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, arrived at Joint Base Andrews, they were not simply met by a group of government officials. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump went to the airport to welcome them personally. And the welcome was huge. There was a red carpet, honor guards, a 21-gun salute, the national anthems of both countries, and even a military flyover. Later, at the White House, the formal arrival ceremony was even bigger, with hundreds of military personnel, military bands, a military review, and a flyover by a B-2 bomber and four F-22 fighter jets. I have to say, I wasn't really surprised by how grand the welcome was. In Chinese culture, there is an idea called “face,” or “mianzi.” It can be important to show respect and recognize someone's status. So, when you have a very important guest, giving them a big welcome can be a way of showing that they are important. And Xi Jinping definitely received a very big welcome. But there was another interesting moment later that night. Trump and Xi attended a formal state dinner at the White House. The dinner was carefully planned, with Chinese-inspired decorations, American food, famous business leaders, and performances by American military musicians. But one part of the entertainment caught people's attention. The musicians performed music from the famous musical Les Misérables. And one of the songs was “Do You Hear the People Sing?” Now, if you know a little about Chinese and Hong Kong history, you might find that choice interesting. “Do You Hear the People Sing?” is a song about people rising up and demanding to be heard. During the 2019 Hong Kong protests, the song became closely associated with pro-democracy demonstrations. It was also removed from some Chinese music platforms. So, when you hear that this song was played at a White House dinner for Xi Jinping, you might naturally ask: “Was that intentional?” Was the United States trying to send Xi Jinping a message? Well, we don't really know. There is no clear evidence that the song was chosen specifically to send a political message to Xi. It could simply have been part of the musical program. But that's what makes the moment so interesting. Sometimes, in international diplomacy, even a song can get people talking. And personally, I think this is one of the most fascinating parts of the whole visit. The welcome ceremony was saying, “You are an important guest.” But the choice of music made some people wonder if there was another message hiding between the lines. And of course, the visit wasn't just about ceremonies and dinner. Behind all the impressive events, Trump and Xi had some very serious issues to discuss. So, what exactly did they talk about? Let's take a look. One of the biggest topics was trade. The United States and China have had a difficult trade relationship for years. One important word you often hear in the news is “tariff.” A tariff is a tax placed on goods coming into a country. For example, if the United States puts a tariff on Chinese products, those products can become more expensive when they enter the American market. During the meeting, the two countries agreed to extend their trade truce for another two months. They also agreed to reduce tariffs on some non-sensitive products. The two countries also talked about artificial intelligence, or AI. AI has become an important topic not only in technology but also in international relations. China and the United States are competing to develop advanced AI, so both countries are interested in technology and AI safety. The two sides agreed to create a communication channel for AI-related problems and risks. They also plan to have more talks about AI. Another important topic was military communication. This may sound strange. Why would two countries that have disagreements want to talk about their militaries? Well, communication can actually be very important when countries have tensions. Imagine that something unexpected happens. If the two sides cannot communicate quickly, a small problem could become a much bigger problem. So, China and the United States agreed to strengthen communication between their militaries and work on ways to prevent crises from getting worse. They also discussed fentanyl-related issues and rare earth minerals. Fentanyl is a powerful drug, and the United States has been concerned about chemicals used to make it. China agreed to put export controls on some additional chemicals connected to fentanyl production. Rare earth minerals were another important issue because they are used in many modern technologies, including electronics and electric vehicles. So, when we look at the meeting, we can see that the two leaders talked about many different things: trade, AI, military communication, fentanyl, rare earth minerals, and other international issues. But now comes the interesting question: Did they really agree on enough to call the meeting a success? Well, there isn't one simple answer. Some people see the meeting as a positive step. The Associated Press reported that although there were no major breakthroughs, the two countries created new ways to communicate about AI and military crises. These new communication channels could help prevent future disagreements from becoming bigger problems. In other words, the goal was not necessarily to solve every problem in one meeting. It was also about keeping the two countries talking. And that can be important. Think about two people who have a disagreement. They may not solve the problem immediately, but if they continue talking, they may have a better chance of avoiding a bigger conflict. But other observers had a less positive view. Reuters reported that the summit ended with little sign of major progress on some of the biggest disagreements between the two countries. Trade, AI, Taiwan, and China's relationship with Iran remained difficult issues. The BBC also pointed out something interesting: there was no joint statement from the two countries. Instead, China and the United States released their own separate descriptions of the meeting. The BBC suggested that what was not said may also be important. For example, Taiwan was clearly an important issue for China, but the White House did not mention Taiwan in its main statement about the meeting. So, even though the two leaders were friendly in public, that does not mean they agree on everything. And this is an important point when we read international news. A meeting can be friendly without solving every problem. A country can cooperate with another country on one issue while disagreeing with it on another issue. So, perhaps the best way to describe this meeting is not “a huge success” or “a complete failure.” Instead, we could say: There was some progress, but there was no major breakthrough. The two countries agreed to keep talking. They made some agreements about trade. They created new communication channels for AI and military issues. But many difficult questions are still on the table. The phrase “on the table” is useful here. When we say that an issue is “still on the table,” it means that the issue is still being discussed and has not been solved. And this story is not over. Trump and Xi are expected to meet again at major international events later this year. So, the agreements from this visit will have to be tested over time. Will the trade agreement last? Will the new AI communication channel actually help? Will China and the United States be able to reduce tensions? We don't know yet. But that's one reason international news can be interesting. Sometimes, the most important part of a meeting is not what happens on one day. It's what happens next. And before we say goodbye, I want to leave you with a few questions to think about. First, do you think a meeting between two leaders can be successful even if they don't solve all their problems? And what about the Les Misérables song at the state dinner? Do you think it was just a performance, or do you think it might have had a hidden message? And finally, what do you think will happen next between China and the United States? Will they become more cooperative, or will their disagreements continue? The United States and China have important disagreements, but they also have reasons to cooperate. This meeting did not solve all their problems. But it did create more opportunities for the two sides to communicate. And sometimes, in international relations, keeping the conversation going can be an important first step. I’m Miss Y, and I really hope you enjoyed learning English with me today.
