A growing political narrative says Canadians who question Ottawa's response to Donald Trump, criticize counter-tariffs, or point to Canada's economic vulnerabilities are somehow “blaming Canada” — or worse, siding with America. I reject that completely. Donald Trump owns America's tariffs. He owns his rhetoric and his attacks on Canada. But Canadians are still entitled to ask a much bigger question: How did Canada become so economically vulnerable in the first place? For years Canada has struggled with weak productivity, sluggish business investment, internal trade barriers, stalled resource development, inadequate defence spending and an extraordinary dependence on the American market. Pointing that out isn't hatred of Canada. It might be exactly the opposite. In this episode of Tap the Maple, Bakes examines the growing attempt to turn patriotism into a political loyalty test — and asks whether “elbows up,” retaliatory tariffs and calls for Canadian sacrifice are actually making the country stronger. Because counter-tariffs aren't magic economic weapons that fly across the border and hurt only Americans. Canadian businesses import those goods. Canadian manufacturers use American components.
