Mark Carney says Canada's pivot away from the United States “will come at a cost.” But before Canadians are asked to pay that cost, there's a question nobody seems interested in asking: Did Canada exhaust the alternatives? Canada's retaliatory tariffs are now in effect, covering roughly $27.6 billion of American imports. Ottawa is simultaneously spending billions supporting Canadian workers and businesses affected by the trade war. But what if Canada's most powerful response isn't another tariff? What if it's COMPETITION? The IMF has estimated that eliminating Canada's non-geographic internal trade barriers could eventually increase real GDP by nearly 7%. Canada continues to struggle with productivity, investment, regulatory barriers and the ability of businesses to scale. So why isn't THAT the national emergency? There may be a third option. Make Canada extraordinarily competitive. Remove internal trade barriers. Build infrastructure. Develop our resources. Attract investment. Increase productivity. Expand into Europe and Asia, while fighting relentlessly to preserve access to the enormous American market sitting directly beside us. Diversification doesn't have to mean abandoning America. It can mean America AND the rest of the world. And perhaps real Canadian sovereignty isn't proving how much economic pain we're willing to tolerate.
