Who Did Basketball Make You Become?

About this episode
The Greatest Victory Wasn’t a Championship.”
What if the greatest thing basketball ever gave you wasn’t a trophy… but the person you became?
In this special episode of Redeeming the Game, I sit down with two former players from the early years of my coaching career to reflect on a journey that began in a high school gym but has shaped the rest of their lives.
One was one of the most gifted athletes I ever coached. The other became one of the greatest role players to ever wear our uniform. Different abilities. Different roles. Different paths.
Today, both are husbands. Both are fathers. Both have faithfully served our country in the United States military—one already retired, the other preparing to retire. And most importantly, both are followers of Jesus Christ.
Together, we look beyond the championships and unforgettable games to uncover the lessons that mattered most. We talk about discipline, sacrifice, leadership, teamwork, adversity, military service, marriage, fatherhood, and the ways God used basketball to prepare them for a life far bigger than the game itself.
This conversation is a reminder that coaching isn’t ultimately about producing better players. It’s about helping shape men and women who love God, serve others, and lead with integrity long after the final buzzer sounds.
Because the greatest victory wasn’t a championship.
It was watching young athletes become faithful husbands, devoted fathers, servant leaders, and men who understand that their identity is rooted in Christ—not in their performance.
In this episode you’ll discover:
Why the lessons learned in the gym prepared these players for military service and life beyond basketball. How stars and role players both have indispensable value on a team—and in God’s Kingdom. What these former athletes now define as true success. How beloved identity and righteousness in Christ outlast every championship, award, and statistic. Why the greatest legacy of a coach is measured not by banners on the wall, but by the lives transformed along the way.If I could go back and talk to my younger self as a coach, these are the 10 things I’d tell him first.I put them all into a free guide called “10 Things I Wish I Knew as a Young Coach.”No fluff.
