33: There's No Right Way to Grieve - Everything I Wish I Knew Sooner About Grief

About this episode
Donate to The Nicholas Gonzalez Foundation to help us reach more patients around the world.
Eleven years after losing my husband in my arms, I admit I set out to earn an A in grieving, and grief refused to grade on a curve.
I'm the president of the foundation carrying on Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez's work, and I walk alongside people facing the deadliest of diseases, so I know grief isn't only what arrives after a loss. It also shows up the moment a serious diagnosis is spoken out loud.
Some people call it anticipatory grief. I think of it as pending grief, the grief that comes before.
I read every book, sat in every group, and listened to every psychic who claimed to have a message from Nick, testing each one with a password only he and I knew.
Not one of them ever got it right.
What I have now are a handful of voices that told me the truth, a faith that held me when I couldn't hold myself, and one old image of a ship slipping past the horizon that has become my truest picture of what happens when someone we love dies.
If you're grieving someone who's already gone, someone still here, or someone you're afraid of losing, this one is for you. There is no map, and the absence of a map does not mean you are lost.

The Book of Common Prayer
"For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens."
"O God of grace and glory… In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord."
John 11:25–26
"I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die."
