JP Oldfield (20260922)

In this darkly cinematic and deeply compelling episode, Peggy‑Sue welcomes JP Oldfield, a Wiltshire‑based independent singer‑songwriter whose music blends Southern Gothic, dark folk, Americana and blues into a haunting, roots‑rich sound. With his deep baritone voice, resonator guitar and signature suitcase bass drum, JP crafts raw, atmospheric songs built around storytelling, unusual instrumentation and a fascination with the shadowy corners of human experience.Inspired by artists like Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash and Colter Wall, JP’s work inhabits a world of ghosts, sinners, redemption, moral ambiguity and myth. His unconventional guitar style — shaped as a self‑taught musician — uses hybrid picking, unusual tunings and textured playing to create a sound that feels both intimate and cinematic. In this episode, Peggy‑Sue and JP dive into his ambitious new multimedia concept EP, Saltwater Gospel — inspired by dark maritime folklore, mythology and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The EP follows a Ferryman trapped between life and death, exploring grief, vengeance, religious hypocrisy, catastrophe and acceptance. Alongside the music, JP created the artwork and mythology himself, making Saltwater Gospel a complete creative world.Listeners will hear exclusive plays from the EP, offering a first glimpse into this immersive, atmospheric project. If you love roots music with depth, storytelling, and a voice that feels carved from the earth itself, this episode is unmissable.
