A disturbing broadcast interrupts an ordinary evening in rural Vermont. At an abandoned cemetery, police have surrounded a mausoleum, a doomsday cult refuses to surrender, and the cameras are still rolling. Then a black fog pours across the grounds—and the transmission ends. Norman believes there must be an explanation. But as the darkness spreads through the countryside, cutting off roads and silencing communications, the emergency on television becomes a threat to the home he shares with his wife, Wendy. Authorities have issued a simple instruction: stay indoors. With the windows disappearing behind an impenetrable blackness, Norman gathers what he needs to keep them safe.
