About this episode

Week 3 — Before Your Body Shouts: Learn to Hear the Whispers What if your body isn’t fighting against you? What if it’s trying to protect you?Tight shoulders. A clenched jaw. Holding your breath. A body that seems unable to relax. We can easily become frustrated with these sensations and wonder, “Why won’t my body just let go?”But what happens when we ask a different question?“What might my body be trying to protect?”In Week 3 of Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley introduces us to one of Australia’s most ancient and misunderstood animals — the crocodile — to explore the remarkable protective intelligence of the human nervous system.Crocodiles have survived for millions of years because their systems are exceptionally good at one thing: survival.Your nervous system also has protection at its core.Moment by moment, it receives sensory information and responds to what is happening within and around you. When your system perceives a need for protection, that response can sometimes be experienced as muscular tension, bracing, restricted breathing or a feeling of being unable to completely let go.Rather than immediately treating those responses as something that needs to be fought or forced away, Somatic Movement invites us to become curious about them.Because your body may not be the enemy. It may be doing the best it can with the information it currently has.And when we begin providing new sensory information and movement possibilities, we can start developing a very different relationship with our body.🐊 In This Episode, You’ll Explore:Why your nervous system is constantly working to protect youWhy muscular tension and bracing may be protective responsesWhat the crocodile can teach us about survival and adaptationWhy your body can sometimes find it difficult to “let go”The connection between stress, breathing and muscular tensionWhy forcing a tense body to relax may not always be the answerHow Somatic Movement can provide new sensory informationThe importance of noticing your body’s quieter signalsHow curiosity can change the way you experience tension and discomfortWhy working with your body can feel very different from fighting against it🌿 Your Somatic in September PracticeThis week, notice one moment when your body becomes tense.Perhaps your shoulders rise.Your jaw tightens.Your breathing changes.Your stomach contracts.Your hands grip.Or you notice yourself bracing somewhere in your body.Instead of immediately trying to make the tension disappear, pause for a moment.Notice it.And gently ask yourself:“What might my body be protecting right now?”You don’t need to find the perfect answer. The practice is simply about replacing frustration with curiosity.Notice what happens when, rather than demanding that your body change, you become interested in what it may be communicating.🎧 Your Guided Somatic PracticeYou'll find a guided Somatic Movement practice accompanying this episode to support your exploration throughout the week.Approach the movements gently and with curiosity.Remember:You’re not trying to override your body. You’re offering it new options.Your nervous system has spent your entire life gathering information, adapting and trying to protect you.Learning to recognise its quieter signals may help you notice what your body is communicating before it has to shout for your attention.Next week, we complete our Somatic in September journey by stepping away from the noise and rediscovering something many of us have quietly lost:Connection. Stillness. Presence.Until then, remember:Your body has spent every moment of your life trying to protect you.The moment we stop seeing the body as the enemy and begin approaching it as a partner, our relationship with ourselves can start to change.Stay curious. Stay compassionate with your body.Continue Your Learning 🎥 Watch Heidi's TEDx Talk Pandiculation: The Natural Solution to Chronic Pain and Discomfort: https://youtu.be/hfOe-oiHWDU?si=RgB2-Y5sr5YbjL3p Discover why changing the way your brain communicates with your muscles can transform the way you move, feel and live.
