30 Plants a Week for Gut Health: Your Gut Is Not Asking for Perfection

About this episode

What if supporting your gut started with adding more, not taking more away?In this episode of the Plant Powered Collective Podcast, I’m introducing the 30 Plants Challenge, but perhaps not in the way you expect. This is not a diet. It is not 30 vegetables. It is not an elimination plan. And it is definitely not another exercise in nutritional perfection. Instead, I want to use 30 plants as an invitation to become curious about the variety already on your plate and discover simple ways to expand it. The idea of eating more than 30 different plant foods per week gained attention through the American Gut Project. Researchers found differences in the gut microbial communities of participants reporting more than 30 plant types per week compared with those reporting fewer than 10. Importantly, the research does not establish 30 as a magic number or a universal prescription. It gives us an interesting framework for exploring dietary diversity.  And that is exactly how I want us to use it. Instead of asking: What do I have to stop eating? Let’s ask: What could I add? In this episode, we talk about why I would like to move away from the word diet altogether, how plant diversity can fit into the meals you already enjoy, why your starting point matters more than hitting an arbitrary number, and how to build variety gradually without turning gut health into another full-time job. You’ll also hear why I believe better nutrition often begins with curiosity rather than discipline. In this episodeWhy the 30 Plants Challenge is about diversity, not perfectionWhat the American Gut Project actually tells us about plant varietyWhy 30 should be viewed as a framework rather than a scoreWhy I want to move the conversation away from dieting and restrictionHow herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, whole grains and legumes can contribute to plant diversityHow to assess your current plant variety before changing anythingWhy adding can be more sustainable than eliminatingHow to make meals you already love more plant-diverseWhy bio-individuality still mattersHow to increase fiber gradually and listen to your bodyYour challenge this week Before trying to eat 30 plants, count what you already eat. No judgment. No grade. That is your starting point. Then ask:What is one meal I already love that I could make just a little more plant-diverse? Join the Free 30 Plants Challenge + Gut Health Series.
