The Shame of Falling Behind | Timelines, Rejection & Becoming

About this episode

What happens when the person you thought you would become doesn’t look like the person you are right now? Lately, I’ve been thinking about shame. Not just the obvious kind, but the quieter kind that makes you question yourself when your life doesn’t look the way you thought it would. The kind that shows up when your friends are getting jobs, getting married, making money, and reaching milestones, while you feel like you’re still trying to figure out life after school. For me, shame became tangled up with my identity. I had always seen myself as ambitious, confident and capable of talking my way through almost anything. But after experiencing job rejections, I started questioning that version of myself. Instead of trying again, I retreated. And eventually, I realised that I wasn’t just taking a break. I was protecting myself from being rejected again. And that protection started spilling into everything else: my career, my creativity, my podcast, my writing, even my friendships. In this episode, I’m reflecting on what shame has taught me about identity, comparison, rejection, money, friendship and the pressure to be “on track” by a certain age. I’m also learning that not every achievement has to be visible to count. Sometimes the biggest things we accomplish are internal: learning to communicate better, setting boundaries, becoming more honest with ourselves, choosing not to abandon ourselves, or simply continuing to become. Maybe shame has been telling you a story about who you are, too. So this is a reminder that you are not your rejection. You are not your timeline. You are not the things you have or don’t have. You are a person experiencing life, learning, changing and becoming. And maybe that deserves to count for more than we let it. Welcome back to Sacred Self Studio, a space for honest conversations about what makes us human and what it means to realise our potential. I don’t have this figured out, but I’m learning out loudly.
